This session will explore the use of running records as an assessment tool for reading – decoding and comprehension. Participants will learn how to take a running record and how to use the information gained for assessment and teaching purposes.

Participants will then trial completing a running record in their own setting and return to session 2 to consider next steps/any issues arising/questions and answers

Participants must attend both sessions

Target Group

All teaching staff as a refresher, new teaching staff/NQTs, Teaching Assistants, 1:1 tutors

  • How do you code a running record and work out the level of text for the reader
  • Practical activity using video
  • What does the running record tell you about an individual reader
  • What are the next steps
