To look at how Year 1 teachers can assess the gaps in phonics learning, how to tackle the gap so it doesn’t become an ongoing feature of the current cohort of pupils as the journey through KS1.

Target Group Year 1 teachers and TAs
Course Content
  • To ensure children know the skills for decoding for reading and encoding for spelling.
  • To ensure the children are able to read consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words, and to spell them out.
  • To ensure children know how to read non decodable words.
  • To ensure children know how to read and spell words using consonant diagraphs
  • To ensure children know how to read and spell words using vowel diagraphs.
  • To ensure children know how to read and spell CCVC and CVCC words (‘stack,’ ‘spoon ‘belt,’ ‘milk’ etc)
  • Children should to be able to do all of the above securely and read words straight off, rather than having to sound them out. They should also be able to write every letter, mostly correctly.
  • Assess all of the above and ensure children are secure before starting Year 1 phonics.
