Target Group Year 2 teachers and TAs
Course Content
  • To ensure children know the skills for decoding for reading and encoding for spelling.
  • To ensure children know how to read and spell words using vowel diagraphs.
  • To ensure children have secure knowledge of all taught consonant and vowel diagraphs and trigraphs.
  • To ensure children know new graphemes(different ways of spelling each sound) and alternative pronunciations for these: for example, learning that the grapheme ‘ow’ makes a different sound in ‘snow’ and ‘cow’.
  • To ensure children know split vowel digraphs such as the a-e in ‘name.’
  • To ensure children become quicker at blending, and start to do it silently.
  • To ensure children use the right graphemes when spelling, and will learn further tricky words.
Assess all of the above and ensure children are secure before starting Year 2 phonics.
