This session is to support reception staff in preparing for children who will have not completed Phase 1 in nursery and to support their transition

Target Group

Reception Teachers looking to assess gaps in Phase 1 phonics

All staff new to nursery and reception will benefit from this training.

Course Content

Children in nursery will focus on developing their listening skills.

In Phase 1 phonics, children are taught about:

• Environmental sounds
• Instrumental sounds
• Body percussion (e.g. clapping and stamping)
• Rhythm and rhyme
• Alliteration
• Voice sounds
• Oral blending and segmenting (e.g. hearing that d-o-g makes ‘dog’)
